Florida State University presents a symposium on “Invisible Work in the Digital Humanities,” to be held November 17 and 18, 2016, at Strozier Library

Florida State University presents a symposium on “Invisible Work in the Digital Humanities,” to be held November 17 and 18, 2016, at Strozier Library.

Digital Humanities projects that involve content specialists and scholars working alongside digital experts and technologists frequently proceed under the assumption that the participants in these collaborative endeavors share common goals. But is this really true?

This two-day symposium, featuring three keynote speakers from universities across the country, will attempt to identify the unspoken assumptions surrounding collaborative work in the digital humanities by exploring questions about diverging expectations, unequal labor, and invisible work.

Information about the symposium is available at http://iwdh.cci.fsu.edu/. Registration will open Sept. 6th and close Oct. 31st.

Digital Humanities + Data Journalism Symposium Held at University of Miami

This fall, the University of Miami will host the first symposium focusing on the intersection of digital humanities and data journalism research. Academics and journalists share common interests and questions about obtaining and visualizing data, the ethics involved in data research, and the work of communicating the results of research to the public effectively.

DH+DJ will mix training workshops for data processing, visualization, and cleaning with talks from digital humanists and data journalism industry professionals from organizations including the Knight Lab, the BBC News Labs, FiveThirtyEight.com, and Mashable.

Dan Cohen (Digital Public Library of America), Scott Klein (ProPublica), and Lauren Klein (Georgia Tech) will be featured keynote speakers. Our goal is to create an environment where both novice and experienced practitioners can come together to learn and explore the possibilities that the fields of DH and DJ have to offer.

HASTAC 2017 Hosted by the Florida Digital Humanities Consortium

HASTAC 2017
The Possible Worlds of Digital Humanities

November 2-4, 2017
Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, Orlando, Florida

Please mark your calendars for HASTAC 2017: The Possible Worlds of Digital Humanities, being held in Orlando, Florida at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, a premier game site, on November 2-4, 2017. The lead sponsor and organizing group for the conference is the Florida Digital Humanities Consortium (FLDH.org), which includes a dozen different organizations working collaboratively on this project.

The title suggests the simulation theme, and also the hard problems that are on the horizon for DH, and how addressing them might open new areas of research and creative work. It is also a nod to science fiction, and hence has a popular angle also. Watch for more details and a call for papers as the dates approach!
